Bernd & Hilla Becher
Bernd and Hilla Becher were a German artist duo known for their influential work in the field of conceptual photography. Bernd Becher was born in 1931, and Hilla Becher was born in 1934. They met in 1957 and began collaborating shortly after.
The Bechers focused on capturing images of industrial structures such as water towers, coal mines, and gas tanks. Their signature style involved photographing these structures with a detached and objective approach, presenting them as typologies. They meticulously documented various examples of each structure, emphasizing their functional and aesthetic qualities.
The Bechers’ work had a significant impact on the field of photography, influencing the New Topographics movement and shaping contemporary approaches to architectural and landscape photography. They received numerous awards and exhibited internationally.
Bernd Becher passed away in 2007, while Hilla Becher continued their artistic legacy until her death in 2015. Their work continues to be celebrated and studied for its meticulous documentation and aesthetic significance.
